February wrapped up nicely with the annual two-day IMMERSEcon conference on VR and AI in education. This year’s conference showcased how VR is being used more than ever across a wide variety of educational domains, from aviation and religious studies to teacher education and language learning.

475 registrants explored the future of XR technology in education and workforce training through panel talks, presentations, lightning talks, and demonstrations by over 30 researchers, educators, and industry professionals. As part of our commitment to pioneering learning and human connection in the metaverse, IMMERSE has recorded these sessions and made them publicly available on YouTube.
Highlights
Significant highlights included a keynote address by XR expert Cortney Harding, founder of Friends With Holograms, and a fireside chat with Matthew Sanders, Education and VR Director at Meta.

Citing several studies showing that VR training leads to a 75% increase in learning quality and retention, Harding discussed learning advantages of VR such as teaching skills and behaviors in a safe environment and scaling training in a cost-effective and efficient way.

Joining us just two days after the launch of Meta for Education, a new program designed to streamline VR adoption and integration for learning institutions, Sanders shared about the challenges often faced by educators implementing XR and how Meta has worked to create practical solutions.
Takeaways
- XR enables unlimited practice at scale in a way that is cost-effective and significantly improves learning outcomes.
- Implementing XR in classrooms and training environments has become simpler with companies like Meta and ArborXR providing new tools to overcome practical challenges like device setup, content management, and student monitoring.
- Organizations like XR Access and RECITE are leading the charge to increase accessibility and human-centered design in XR.
- XR is being used in a wide variety of learning and training contexts across all subject matters and for teaching both soft and hard skills.
- There is a need to share content more easily across organizations, a gap that the OEXR Library and Rob Theriault are working to fill.
